Find out about Spots v Stripes

What is Spots v Stripes?

Cadbury has created Spots v Stripes, the biggest, most funnest game ever to celebrate their role as Official Treat Provider to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

We want to get the nation in the mood for London 2012 by splitting everyone into two sides Spots and Stripes, and play against each other in our big game.

It doesn’t matter what game you play. Any game counts, from hopscotch to Balloon Bellyflop and everything in between. We’re providing loads of games, challenges and events for you to play, winning prizes and points along the way. You can win points for your own games too. Points are either automatically awarded or claimed online. All points go towards your personal and side’s total scores, with Spots v Stripes scores updated in real time on our scoreboard. Ultimately the side with the most points wins. Although it’s really about rediscovering the joy of playing games!

Whose side am I on?

It’s up to you to choose a side. As part of the registration process you’re asked to join a team. You might already be a fan of Spots or Stripes on Facebook, have played a game at an event or have a life-long devotion to one shape over the other, in which case, simply pick your favourite. If you can’t make up your mind then you can play our side-decider game and get allocated to a side instead. You can’t change sides once you’ve registered, so make sure you pick wisely.

How long does the game go on?

Spots v Stripes has already kicked off and will run right up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The side with the most points at the end will be the winner.

What happens at the end of Spots v Stripes?

The two sides will meet in one final game to decide, once and for all, which shape is the best with a point score-off. There’s an extra special prize lined up for the winning team, as well as eternal bragging rights, but, with two years to go we don’t want to give anything away just yet, so you’ll just have to wait and see.

How old do I have to be to take part?

You need to be 13 or older, and living in the UK or Republic of Ireland. See our terms and conditions for more information

What games can I play?

Pretty much anything you like…one-on-one games, like tennis; team games, like football; family games, like tiddlywinks or snap and even games that you’ve created, like bicycle badminton or sock wrestling.

Any game counts, but it’s best to make sure you’re playing against someone from the other side, as you can only win a point if a Spot plays a Stripe.

More information on Spots v Stripes rules and claiming points can be viewed here.

Of course, games must be safe, and not break the law, so we will moderate content and remove any game that falls outside what we view as acceptable. This is part of our Play Responsibly guidance, which can be viewed here.

You can also play our game of the week (sent to you by email), online games, competitions and Challenges.

So can I make up my own games and claim points for them?

Absolutely. Any game counts, from custard cricket to 50-aside football... in fact the more bonkers, the better. Spots v Stripes is about helping the nation play more games, so you can be as creative as your imagination lets you. Games don’t have to stick to familiar or traditional formats and in fact, the most fun can sometimes be had by putting a new twist on a classic game.

Does Bog Snorkelling count as a game?

Oh yes indeedy! Just make sure you’re snorkelling against people who are on the other side of the Spots v Stripes divide from you and put a competitive spin on it. You’ll be able to score points if you win Bog Snorkelling races for example. We love to hear that usually sensible people are going out and getting wet and muddy. So please bog snorkel to your heart’s content, just remember to snorkel responsibly.

What’s this all got to do with London 2012?

Cadbury is the Official Treat Provider for London 2012 and has a heritage of working with the Olympic Games as a sponsor of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Cadbury has many of the same values as the Olympic movement – inspiration, optimism, community and we want to use our relationship to get the nation in the mood for London 2012 by helping them play more games. That’s why we’re splitting everyone into two sides, Spots v Stripes and asking them to get involved in the biggest, funnest game ever!

Why are games so important?

Let’s not take the idea of playing games too seriously, but you have to admit that as you grow up grass stains, goals and playing till your mum calls you in for tea quickly become a thing of the past.

For example, a whopping 7 out of 10 families say they don’t find time to play together. And as for adults, board games are rarely on our to-do list; 87% of us admit to only ever playing at Christmas (British Social Attitudes Survey 2007).

We think games are a great. They lead to competition, to sport...even to great sporting moments. They get us interacting and more importantly, they raise a smile. "Play is crucial: It helps create successful society and cohesive communities" (Dr Stuart Brown, Play Researcher pioneer).

How do I find out about Spots v Stripes events?

Spots v Stripes is already touring the country at local events and hosting five big city events this summer. Cadbury has a tradition of investing in communities and leisure time, which is why Spots v Stripes is also kick-starting a grass roots initiative of game play with a games crew of over 2000 staff and volunteers supporting our events and bringing communities together through play.

More detail on our events programme and the games crew can be found here.

If you want to contact us about something specific all our contact information can be found here.

Do I need tickets for any of the Spots v Stripes events?

No! All our events are FREE to attend, you just need to register on arrival to be able to play our huge games. Players under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Why aren't there any events taking place in Wales?

Whilst there aren't any big events taking place in Wales this year, our games crew will be active in Wales, taking their kit of games to communities and encouraging them to play, as well as lots of other activities yet to be revealed. Next year we will be visiting different parts of the country with Spots v Stripes. Our big events are just one way to participate in Spots v Stripes, on top of our game of the week, Facebook pages, Twitter feed and simply playing games.

How do I contact someone about Spots v Stripes?

If you want to contact us about something specific all our contact information can be found here.

Why is Cadbury sponsoring London 2012?

It’s a great honour for Cadbury to be the Official Treat Provider to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is a label and a responsibility we don’t take lightly. Even though we are famous for making great-tasting chocolate, we also like to promote sport, fun and responsible eating. Our involvement allows us to embrace the spirit of the Olympic movement, support our community, and invite the entire nation to come out and play.

Challenge Bar

What is a Challenge Bar?

To mark the start of Spots v Stripes we've even turned our Cadbury chocolate into a game! The new challenge bar has three pieces; one for a Spot, one for a Stripe and an in-pack game to decide who wins the middle piece.

When are the Challenge Bars in store and for how long?

Challenge Bars are available to buy in store now, you should be able to pick them up in all the regular places that sell Cadbury chocolate. You'd better hurry, they're only available until October 2010.

How do I play?

Each Challenge Bar has one of 20 different challenges inside for you to play. The bar is divided into three pieces; one spotty piece, one stripey piece and one piece for whoever wins the game. So all you need to do is grab yourself a bar, find a friend to play for the opposite team and get playing!

Can I score a point?

The winner of the challenge gets the extra piece of chocolate and can also come online to claim a point for their victory. Just type in the name of the game you played and enter the details about when you played. Who knew scoring points could taste so good?

The Rules

Do I have to be registered to play Spots v Stripes?

You need to be a registered “Spot” or “Stripe” player in order to score points and have a player profile within the game. Due to legal restrictions we can only register players over 13 years old, please refer to our Ts & Cs for more information.

When the big game kicks off in August there will be lots of games to play and content to watch for those who are unregistered, however any games you win won’t result in points.

Registering is quick and easy – after all, we want you out playing games, not filling in forms. Register now.

Can I swap sides?

The Leopard cannot change its Spots… And neither can you (or your Stripes). Swapping sides is not possible once you’ve registered as a player. You can delete your profile and start again, but you will lose any points you’ve already won.

What’s the difference between online games and games I play myself?

When you win and participate in games and activities online, points are automatically added to your player profile and side’s score. Currently, you can play our game of the week via email, to win points and prizes. If you’re not signed up to receive email you can edit this in edit settings on your profile page

When you win a game offline, you need to log in and claim the point manually via the Claim a point page.

What if I want to play someone who isn’t registered?

You’re welcome to play any game, against anyone, but only certain games and activities result in points. You can claim a point against someone who isn’t registered by inviting as part of the claim a point process. However the point won’t be awarded until they’ve completed registration and confirmed they’re on the opposing side.

Can Spots play Spots and Stripes play Stripes?

Whether you’re slugging it out playing thumb wars, or out on the court, you can always play any game, against anyone, even if you’re on the same side. However, you can only claim a point for games with at least one Spot and one Stripe on opposing sides.

What if I’m playing a team sport, like hockey, and I’m on the winning team? Do I get a point?

Yes you do. Let’s face it, after 50 stamina-sapping minutes of touch rugby or badminton, you deserve a point. We’ve made it easy for you to add team-mates when claiming a point so that all the members of a winning team can get a point each.

Do team games have to be Spots only v Stripes only?

No. You can have mixed teams of Spots and Stripes for any game, you just need to make sure there’s at least one Spot and one Stripe on each side. If the point claim is successful, each member of the winning team scores a point (whether they’re a Spot or a Stripe).

Can a duck-billed platypus be used as a cricket bat?

No! Although that duck-bill does look like it could smack a six off even Brett Lee’s bowling, you can’t use them for cricket. They are not only a protected species, but the males also have a venomous spur on their heels, which could leave you in a lot of pain if you tried to use them in a game of Twenty20. It’s much better to stick to a traditional willow bat.

How do I Play Responsibly?

Claiming Points

How do I claim a point for winning a game?

It’s easy. If you have won a game against someone on the opposing side, simply go to the Claim a point page on this website and follow the on-screen instructions. If your opponent isn’t a registered player you can invite them to join via email during the claim a point process.

How do I claim a point with a token?

If you’ve got a point token with a unique code from winning at a Spots v Stripes event, simply go to the Claim a point page on this website and follow the on-screen instructions for claiming a point with a token. If your code isn’t valid or has already been redeemed you won’t be able to claim a point.

Are there any limits or restrictions to claiming points?

You can only claim points from games that have been played within four weeks of the entry date and there’s a maximum limit of claiming 10 points a day. If you’re each playing more than 280 games a month we will be amazed and pretty chuffed (!) although on a sensible note we can always look at increasing the caps, so let us know if you have any suggestions. There’s no expiry date on point tokens, but they can only be redeemed once.

What do I do if someone’s claimed a point against me by mistake? Is this what quibbling is all about?

Mistakes happen and it’s possible that someone will claim a point against you by mistake, or make up a game to try and increase their score. Games are meant to be fun and we don’t want anyone falling out over disagreements, so we’ve created a system to keep things fair.

When anyone claims a point against you, you have the right to remove yourself and delete the game completely, or have a bit of fun and quibble over the result.

If you quibble, the original point claimer can choose from 3 options:

  • Delete the game

  • Agree that you won the point, not them

  • Decide the quibble randomly via the Resolverator

Simple, fair and fun.

Can I quibble over professional games of sport? The recent World Cup match between England v Germany for example?

Oh dear, maybe you haven’t been paying attention. Firstly, you would have needed to personally play in the match in order to claim the point. Secondly, you and your German adversary would need to be a registered Spot and a registered Stripe. Thirdly, quibbling should only be used when there is confusion or playful disagreement about the score or the match… and I’m afraid to say that even the Resolverator couldn’t argue the case for this one.

What happens if no one responds to a point I claim against them?

If there is no response for 40 days after the claim was made, the point gets awarded and the opponent loses the right to quibble.

What happens if no one responds to a quibble?

If there is no response for 40 days after the quibble was made, the point gets randomly resolved by the Resolverator and all players lose the right to intervene in the decision.

What is the Resolverator?

The Resolverator is our mythical machine that sits deep in the body of the Scor’o’tron for resolving quibbles over points. It’s totally impartial and resolves them in a completely random way, so there can be no bias towards one side or another.

Once you push the button the result could be win, lose or draw and will be automatically implemented.

I forgot my login/password. What do I do?

First of all, don’t panic! Second of all, go to the Log in page and click the "Forgot username/password" button. Fill out a couple of details and we will send you an email reminding you of whatever you’ve forgotten. And relax…

What goes in My Awards on my Player profile?

Spots v Stripes has medals, plates and trophies that can be won for participation and excellence in gaming across the entire game.

What’s the best cheese to roll in a cheese rolling competition?

Ah! One of the most frequently asked of all questions, but one with no definitive answer. On pure stats, Dutch Gouda cheese has been rolled to victory in more cheese races than any other, but the record for the most wins by one person is held by James Gilbert, rolling a wheel of Stilton.

In some respects the cheese chooses the roller, and not the other way around. Find the right cheese for you and you could be a winner. However, if it’s a hot day, we don’t recommend anything soft like Camembert or Brie.

How do I know what’s going on with the points I claim and the quibbles I’m involved in?

Your Player profile will receive updates covering all pieces of key activity, games played and point information. When logged in you are alerted to new notifications in the profile box, top right of the screen. If you click here it uploads your full Updates page.

You will also receive automatic email updates from the Scor’o’tron to alert you to this information.

How do I search for other players?

On the left hand side of your player profile is a search box where you can find other players by typing in their username or email address. This will generate a list of results, which you can click on to view other Spotty or Stripey players’ profiles.

How do I get back to the Homepage??

Our Spots v Stripes logo at the top of each page links back to the homepage so you can get back there at any time.

Does the website use cookies?

Yes, but they’re not the kind we usually smother in Cadbury chocolate. These electronic cookies let the website remember some of your information. This means you can get around the website more quickly, giving you more time for playing games. Full details are included in our Privacy Policy.
